Singapore Chinese New Year Drone Show Brings Chaos to Marina Bay Sands

Singapore

Singapore presents a special performance during Chinese New Year. However, this performance made the MBS area crowded and congested.

Reporting from Channel News Asia, Singapore Tourism Board (STB) and UOB are hosting The Legend of the Dragon Gate: Drone Show by the Bay. This event was held on February 10, 11, 12, 16, 17 and 18 at the Marina Bay Sands (MBS) field.

This event starts at 20.00 Singapore time. The first performance was very lively. The streets and mall areas are crowded with tourists.

Tourists crowd the streets during the show. The situation was made worse by the weather which raised concerns about the safety of spectators.

For the next show, the event party asks that tourists do not gather in one place.

“We also urge the public to consider alternative viewing locations for the show, such as across the bay, as the 10-minute show can be seen along the 3.5km Marina Bay waterfront with MBS in the background,” said a spokesperson.

The show featured 1,500 drones forming a dragon above Marina Bay. This crowd even sparked anger among residents on social media.

“MBS staff were unable to handle large crowds of people. Children were crying and parents looked worried. People were shouting at each other not to push,” said Justin Tan in the comments column of the CNA video.

Another netizen shared his experience while watching the show. He said that when it rained, all the spectators tried to enter the mall through the narrow doors. The event was said to be chaotic.

“Marina Bay Sands experienced a traffic jam that ruined the drone show when it started raining and everyone filed into the mall,” wrote Carolyn Leo.

Leo also said that there were many children, disabled people in wheelchairs and elderly people who were squashed in the crowd.

MBS swiftly improved security by closing the entrance from Black Tap to Da Paolo Gastronomia. The doors will close gradually starting at 17.00 local time.

“Exit D of Bayfront MRT station, near the boat ride section of the mall may also be closed to incoming guests depending on the crowd situation,” he added
