Since Launched 2016, Pokemon GO Earns US$ 5 Billion

This week marks five years since Niantic launched its most popular Pokemon GO game. Even though the game’s frenzy is no longer what it was when it was first introduced in 2016, Pokemon GO is still able to generate billions in revenue for Niantic.

Data released by research firm Sensor Tower shows that Niantic has grossed more than US$ 5 billion since it was first launched in July 2016. This means that Sensor Tower wanted to show that on average Niantic pocketed US$ 1 billion from Pokemon GO.

The COVID-19 lockdown that engulfed the entire world in 2020 has proven to be beneficial for the gaming industry. One of the beneficiaries is Pokemon GO, which is produced by Niantic. Data shown by Sensor Tower shows that Niantic was able to make a profit of around US$1.3 billion in 2020.

Yes! The year 2020 was the best record for the company, far surpassing the previous record set in 2019. It was noted that in 2019 Niantic, through Pokemon GO players, was only able to reap a profit of around US$ 400 million.

Sensor Tower attributes the success of Pokemon GO in 2020 to the update of the game by Niantic. Yes! Niantic took advantage of the lockdown due to COVID 19 by making a game in the form of virtual reality, which in the end was suitable to be played without the players having to crowd the streets.

It seems that what Niantic has done resonates well. This can be seen from the income that was achieved by Pokemon GO and successfully broke records. Furthermore, Niantic has also hinted that they are planning to roll back some of the changes triggered by the pandemic.

However, some changes will be retained, while some new adjustments will be added. Although there is no data for Pokemon GO revenue this year, it seems Pokemon Go is still enjoying its popularity as Niantic will be holding Pokemon GO Fest online on July 17 and 18.

Besides being held virtual, Pokemon GO Fest will also hold face-to-face (offline) in several cities that are certainly safe from COVID 19. This event will set an entrance ticket of US$ 5, from US$ 14.99 in previous years, as a result of the game’s five-year anniversary.
