‘Significant number of Dutch people have signed up to fight in Ukraine’ | Inland

“We are amazed at the number of registrations,” Ukrainian ambassador Maksym Kononenko told De Telegraaf. He does not want to name the exact number of registered Dutch people, because of ‘privacy rules’. “We have received a significant number of requests from Dutch citizens who want to join the Ukrainian armed forces. We got those applications before President Zelensky made his announcement yesterday.”

Zelensky wants to create a foreign legion to fight against the Russian troops. It is unknown what exactly the foreign volunteers can do. The Ukrainian embassy in The Hague also does not provide information about how Dutch volunteers will be deployed in Ukraine.

Volunteers do the shopping

Sellers of military clothing and special equipment also see that there is enthusiasm to join the fight in the Ukraine. Gearpoint in Amersfoort has been busy since Thursday with people who want to buy items for Ukraine, such as special military medical kits that can be sent to the country as relief supplies.

The company also gets a lot of information requests through its website and phone calls from people who seem to want to join an international legion. According to a Gearpoint seller, it concerns Ukrainians, but also Dutch people with a background in Defense or the police. He estimates that there are groups of dozens of people in our country who are considering taking this step.

At Noorloos Equipment in Kaatsheuvel, a Dutch war volunteer was on the doorstep on Monday morning for stuff. He would like to leave in a few days. According to entrepreneur Jan Noorloos, it was someone who still works for the Ministry of Defense and wants to call in sick to fight in the Ukraine.

Phone calls

“We are getting more and more calls and messages from Dutch people who want to help Ukraine practically,” said Ambassador Kononenko. “Some people provide humanitarian aid, some provide logistical support, some even message us to let Ukrainians stay in their homes.”

The ambassador will be present on Monday at the debate in the House of Representatives about the war in Ukraine. There he was personally greeted by Prime Minister Rutte, other cabinet members and party leaders. “We really appreciate the help from the Dutch government, which comes in many different ways, from economic support and sanctions to the supply of defensive equipment to Ukraine,” Kononenko said. According to Rutte, ‘every Ukrainian who seeks a safe haven should be generously helped’.
