‘Significant increase in dementia requires more support at home’

The World Health Organization (WHO) is asking governments worldwide to implement national policies for the care of dementia patients. In the Netherlands, the National Dementia Strategy was launched this year by the Ministry of Health, for which Alzheimer Nederland has provided the necessary substantive input. This reports ANP Expert Support.

The strategy has three important pillars: focused on scientific research, on society in general and on customized care and support. The number of people with dementia is also increasing in the Netherlands. Most of them live at home. “They deserve a fully-fledged place in our society. We are working together with VWS to create a dementia-friendly society”, Gerjoke Wilmink, director of Alzheimer Nederland.

big hole

“Alzheimer Netherlands is the largest private financier of scientific research into dementia. However, we still see a large gap between what is invested by the government and what is still needed, especially in the field of support for people with dementia and informal carers.”

“Customized support for living with dementia is an important challenge in the coming years, such as the availability of other forms of housing with appropriate care. The step from owning a home to a nursing home is now too big. Another important point is support at home through case management. and an adequate supply of accessible daytime activities. A lot still needs to be done before everyone has access to a suitable daytime activity in the area,” says Wilmink.
