MOSCOW – The Kremlin said, President Russia, Vladimir Putin has signed a law that completes the process of Russia’s exit from Open Skies Agreement. With the signing of the document, Russia has officially left the agreement.

The legislation was initiated by Putin after the US announced its intention to withdraw from the treaty and was approved by both chambers of the Russian Parliament, the State Duma and the Federation Council. Also read: Russia wants to leave the ISS, this is what NASA is worried about

“The US withdrew from the treaty under trumped-up pretexts, which significantly violated the balance of interests of the parties to the agreement and reached a conclusion. Thus, compliance with the treaty and its importance in building trust and transparency is damaged, and Russia’s national security is threatened.” said the Kremlin.

“In light of these circumstances, the decision has been made to withdraw the Russian Federation from the Open Skies Treaty,” he continued, as reported by Anadolu Agency on Tuesday (8/6/2021).

After Joe Biden was elected as the new US president, Moscow said it was ready to return to the agreement if Washington also reaffirmed its commitments. But hope has been subverted.

The Open Skies Treaty entered into force on January 1, 2002. It was designed to promote mutual understanding and transparency in military development and to suggest the possibility of unarmed aerial reconnaissance flights over all participating territories.
