SIDN releases 1.0 release of network analysis tool SPIN – IT Pro – News

SIDN Labs has released a 1.0 release of its network analysis tool SPIN. This allows users to analyze traffic from IoT devices in their network. In SPIN 1.0 there is a bridge mode and better security.

The repos for SPIN 1.0 are found on GitHub. The Netherlands Domain Registration Foundation had already released SPIN some time ago, but mainly as an experimental tool. With version 1.0 ‘the basic functionality is now complete’, writes SIDN Labs.

The 1.0 release includes a bridge mode. This allows the tool to be installed on routers that are only used as bridges. “As a result, the system on which SPIN runs is not a router, but a transparent ‘bump in the wire'”, the developers write. Users do not need to reconfigure their devices with that bridge mode if they want to use SPIN.

Also new in the release is that the web interface can now be loaded via https and the MQTT connection gets user authentication. SPIN can now also log to files and system logs. In SPIN 1.0 there is also the previously announced PCAP reader present.

SPIN, or Security and Privacy for In-home Networks, is an open source tool developed entirely by SIDN. It is a tool that users can install in their home network so that they can scan iot traffic. The tool is also supplied as standard with the Valibox-software, which SIDN publishes itself.
