Should university fees be reduced when moving from face-to-face to distance learning? – Staburags.lv

College students had to study remotely for two winters due to the covid pandemic, this fall they returned to classrooms. Unexpectedly, the novelty for many is that this academic year it will be necessary to listen to the lessons on a computer screen again. This time, however, the fault lies with the energy crisis caused by the war in Ukraine. There have already been calls to reduce study fees in cases where face-to-face studies turn into distance learning. Would that be a relief for the current situation?

– During the pandemic, distance learning made the learning process more expensive, as universities had to invest in infrastructure: more powerful servers, software and the like. On the other hand, now, in the situation of rapid inflation caused by the crisis of energy resources, the transition to the remote form of studies, thanks to the investments made during the pandemic, will make it possible not to increase the tuition fees and to maintain them at the current level. .
