Should summer or winter time be abolished? | Join the conversation

Winter time is more in line with the human biorhythm, according to the RIVM website. The sun rises early so that people wake up faster due to the light. In the evening people fall asleep better when it has been dark for a while. Winter time would therefore be better for falling asleep and waking up.

Some prefer the summer time, because it stays light longer in the evening. By turning the clocks forward in the spring, people can enjoy the summer evenings longer.

Health

RIVM has conducted research into the various aspects of sleep and health. This shows that people sleep worse immediately after the change from summer to winter time and vice versa. There are also health effects: immediately after the change to summer time, more heart attacks occur.

The discussion about changing the clock has been going on for a long time. In 2018, the European Commission already submitted a proposal not to change the clock anymore and to stick to winter time. This proposal was postponed to 2021, but the abolition will not take place this year either. Almost all European countries have a summer and winter time. Iceland, Russia, Belarus, Armenia and Georgia do not use daylight saving time.

The Telegraph presented the following proposition to readers: daylight saving time should be abolished. Of the participants, 64 percent agree, 34 percent disagree and 2 percent do not know or have no opinion. Whether the participants think that changing time has major consequences shows a divided picture. Of the respondents, 46 percent think it will have major consequences and 46 percent don’t, 8 percent don’t know.
