Shortage of Subsidized Medicines for Cancer and Incurable Diseases in Lebanon

The head of the Lebanese Pharmacists Syndicate, Joe Salloum, confirmed today, Monday, that “a large part of the medicines for cancer and incurable diseases have been cut off from the Lebanese market because they are subsidized and there is no money for support.”

He indicated in an interview with “Sputnik” that “a sustainable drug policy must be developed, an integrated plan must be developed, and a donor conference should be called for a sustainable drug policy. From here, we appealed to hold a dialogue table in order to give the issue of medicine the utmost importance.”

He pointed out that “the majority of these medicines are outside the scope of legitimate pharmacies, either in illegal pharmacies, in shops, or via the Internet.”

He added, “As legitimate pharmacies, we emphasize the quality and quality of medicine, and to ensure that legal pharmacies are free of smuggled and counterfeit medicine, we launched a campaign through which the pharmacist pledges to abide by the official pricing and pledges to adhere to the legitimate medicine.”

And he considered that “today we have taken the status of a personal claim in the Financial Public Prosecution against all forms of smuggling and forgery because it harms the patient’s health.”

He stressed that “most of the smuggled medicines come from Türkiye, Syria, Iran and Pakistan.”

He believed that “the danger of smuggled medicines is that they may be toxic and may be expired and preserved in the wrong way, and lead to the death of the patient, and certainly they do not cure or treat.”

Salloum concluded: “The smuggling of medicine from abroad to the country takes place in the absence of oversight, lack of accountability, and delay in accountability.”
