Shooting Star at Berlin Film Festival for Hanna van Vliet (ANNE+)

Actress Hanna van Vliet was honored with a Shooting Star award for young talent at the Berlin Film Festival. The 29-year-old Van Vliet is best known for her leading role in ANNE+† That started as a series on YouTube at BNNVARA, was later bought by Netflix, after which a film with the same title followed. Since last week the film will be available for streaming service subscribers in 190 countries and 32 languages.

As one of the ten Shooting Star winners, Van Vliet is seen by the jury in Berlin as someone with a chance of an international breakthrough. The award winners took part in a special program where they met with international casting agents and producers. The idea is that they can build up a broad network in this way, increasing the chance of a breakthrough beyond their own national borders.

Van Vliet plays in ANNE+ a young queer in Amsterdam. Gender identity and sexual identity play an important role in the series and film. The jury praises Van Vliet’s play. “She comes across as lively and likeable, and her playing has a strong degree of accuracy, sensitivity and authenticity.”
