Shin Tae Yong’s Strange Substitution When the U-23 National Team Was Beaten by Vietnam

Jakarta, CNN Indonesia

Shin Tae Yong make a strange substitution when Indonesian National Team U-23 beaten by Vietnam 0-3 in Group A SEA Games 2021 (2022) at Viet Tri Stadium, Friday (6/5) evening WIB.

Shin Tae Yong made five substitutions in the match against Vietnam U-23. He included Syahrian Abimanyu, Ronaldo Kwateh, Alfeandra Dewangga, Witan Sulaeman, and Marselino Ferdinand.

Of the five changes, Shin Tae Yong’s decision to replace Ronaldo with Marselino attracted the most attention. This is because Ronaldo was pulled out to be replaced by Marselino even though he only entered in the 61st minute.

Ronaldo came in to replace Irfan Jauhari. The young player belonging to Madura United was plotted as player number nine aka targetman.

But Ronaldo was not able to show a good appearance. The 17-year-old had a hard time making the difference up front for the Garuda Muda team and practically didn’t have a golden opportunity to score.

In the 82nd minute, Shin Tae Yong then pulled out Ronaldo when the U-23 Indonesian National Team trailed 0-2. Ronaldo was replaced by a young player who strengthened Persebaya Surabaya, Marselino Ferdinand.

Shin Tae Yong also revealed the reason for pulling out Ronaldo, who actually only entered the middle of the second half.

“Indeed our players, Ronaldo and Marselino are still very young, still aged 18-19. But this tournament can improve their abilities, especially against the most powerful team in Group A, Vietnam,” said Shin Tae Yong after the match.

The defeat to Vietnam made the Indonesian U-23 national team temporarily occupy fourth place in Group A standings without points. In the next match, Ronaldo et al will meet Timor Leste on 10 May.
