Shin Tae Yong’s Footsteps in Indonesia: From Dispute to Praise

Shin Tae Yong It’s been two years of handling Indonesian National team. This South Korean coach had an argument with PSSI, but is now loved.

This 52-year-old man was announced by PSSI as the coach of the Indonesian national team on December 27, 2019. Shin Tae Yong received a long-term contract, which is until December 2023.

Not only handling the Indonesian national team, Shin Tae Yong was also asked to handle the U-19 and U-23 national teams. In fact, Shin Tae Yong’s main focus is managing the Indonesian national team at the 2021 U-20 World Cup.

Therefore, the first team that Shin handled was the U-19 National Team, which was on January 13, 2020. After a week of training at the Wibawa Mukti Stadium, Cikarang, the team left for Thailand.

During the training camp in Thailand, the team nicknamed Garuda Nusantara underwent six trial matches. The team that was competing against was not the Thai team, but the South Korean team.

After Shin returned from Thailand, it was reported that Shin had an argument with Indra Sjafri, who was an assistant coach at that time. Indra was eventually shifted to PSSI’s Technical Director.

A week from Thailand, Shin started training for the Indonesian national team. During the training camp at the Madya Stadium, Senayan, the Garuda squad lost 1-4 to Persita Tangerang in a test match.

After that the Covid-19 pandemic hit. Football activities had to be stopped. Shin, who could not handle the team, finally decided to return to his hometown in Gyeongbuk, Korea.

While in South Korea, Shin Tae Yong was interviewed by a number of Korean media. The result makes PSSI’s ears red. The 2018 World Cup dropout coach criticized a number of PSSI policies regarding the Indonesian national team.

One of them is Shin Tae Yong’s desire to bring the U-19 national team to practice in his country. Unfortunately PSSI is not willing to fulfill this. Shin Tae Yong was finally forced to return to Indonesia first.

After returning from Korea a number of rumors surfaced. Shin is said to be at odds with PSSI General Chair Mochamad Iriawan. Even Iriawan is said to have threatened Shin.

However, the issue subsided because the Indonesian national team was decided to undergo a training camp in Croatia. This training camp lasted for more than a month and carried out 11 trials.

As a result, the U-19 Indonesian National Team won five times, drew three and lost. A number of controversies accompany the pattern of training and repositioning that Shin applied while he was in the horse country.

Unfortunately the 2021 U-20 World Cup was canceled by FIFA. However, Indonesia’s status as the host did not disappear. FIFA U-20 World Cup 2023 decided to continue in Indonesia.
