In that emotional appearance, Shevchenko also praised Volodymyr Zelensky as a great president.

‘Ukraine wants to be part of Europe, that is our decision as a people. Zelensky was a great president who guided us to our independence and freedom,” Shevchenko said in the program Daily Mail.

While crying, Shevchenko also expressed his concern for the safety of his family who decided to stay in Ukraine.

‘My mother, sister and other relatives are still in Ukraine, I talk to them every day. It was their choice to stay,”said Shevchenko.

“I can’t see what is happening in my country without crying. They told me the truth about what happened in Ukraine, cities were being bombed, children and parents were killed,” the former AC Milan player added.

“We need to try and convince Russia to stop fire, find a diplomatic solution and stop this war,” Shevchenko said.

Shevchenko, who now lives in London with his wife and children, also made a direct appeal to Italians to help welcome Ukrainians who had fallen victim to the Russian invasion.

“When I arrived in Italy, that country opened its heart to me. You made me feel like a part of you, and I felt like my second home,” he said.

“Now I ask you. Are you willing to open your heart to my people, we need your help. Make them feel like you treat me. There’s been a lot of affection from everyone, I know, but I asked for more,” he said. Shevchenko added.
