Shell to cut 7,000 to 9,000 jobs in global reorganization | NOW

Shell is cutting 7,000 to 9,000 jobs. The oil company announced this on Wednesday.

At the presentation of the half-year results at the end of July, CEO Ben van Beurden already announced that Shell would take a close look at the entire company in response to the impact of the corona crisis.

In addition, Van Beurden already mentioned it “likely” that the number of employees would be significantly reduced. The 7,000 to 9,000 jobs include 1,500 people who have already indicated that they want to take advantage of a voluntary severance scheme.

According to a spokesman for Shell, it is not yet possible to say in which countries the jobs will be lost. The company employed approximately 83,000 people by the middle of this year. The total job reduction must be achieved by the end of 2022. Shell says it wants to make the company less complex.

By 2022, this operation and other measures should save about 2 to 2.5 billion dollars (1.7 to more than 2 billion euros) in costs. “This contributes in part to the previously announced 3- to 4 billion cost savings in the first quarter of next year,” said Shell.

Shell recorded a record loss

Shell recorded one in the second quarter loss of 18.1 billion dollars (15.4 billion euros). This was mainly caused by the fact that the British-Dutch concern had to write off USD 16.8 billion. The depreciation was partly caused by the fact that Shell had to adjust the expected margins.

The oil price was already in a downward spiral before the outbreak of the corona crisis. As a result of the COVID-19 outbreak, demand decreased even further and the price fell correspondingly.
