Thiruvananthapuram: MP Shashi Tharoor clarified his position on the scepter controversy. The scepter is a symbol of the past. By laying down the sceptre, the sovereignty is ensured to the Parliament. Tharoor said in a tweet that both sides of the controversy are raising good arguments.
The government says the scepter reflects the continuity of tradition by embodying sacred sovereignty and dharma rule. The constitution was adopted in the name of the people. Sovereignty belongs to the people. Parliament is the representatives of the people. The opposition also argues that it is not a royal title conferred by divine right.
There is no evidence that Jawaharlal Nehru handed over the Mountbatten scepter. Whereas we tend to think of the scepter as a symbol of power. Shashi Tharoor opined that by placing it in the Lok Sabha, it is asserting that sovereignty resides there. Tharoor also said that we can take the scepter from the past to uphold our present values.
