Sharp to market Oled TVs equipped with LG Display panels

According to Korean daily newspaper ET News, the manufacturer Sharp should market its first Oled TVs in Japan by the end of the year, but they will be equipped with Oled panels signed LG Display.

Last summer, the manufacturer Sharp completely stopped the production of Oled tiles for smartphones. The fault was too stiff competition from South Korea (Samsung and LG), but also from China. The manufacturer maintains a factory producing LCD panels in Sakai, but does not yet produce large Oled panels. However, the Japanese manufacturer, owned by Taiwanese Foxconn, intends to market its first Oled TV in Japan before the end of the year. This television will embed an Oled panel from LG Display, the only manufacturer capable of currently producing large Oled panels (between 48 and 88 inches) on a large scale. Sharp remains the largest seller of televisions in Japan, and the arrival of the first Oled televisions at Sharp in the Japanese archipelago is good news for LG Display and for Oled technology in general.

In addition, Sharp always seems to continue to develop new types of screens since the manufacturer has presented a 30-inch rollable Oled screen in November 2019. This Oled television benefited from a new technology since it exploits an Oled panel with direct emission. That is to say that each sub-pixel actually consists of a diode of different color. The Oled tiles used by LG Display for televisions use white sub-pixels on which a red, green or blue color filter is placed in order to display the primary colors. Sharp’s red, green and blue Oled diodes are placed on an IGZO substrate and the assembly is only 0.5 mm thick. However, the Sharp screen does not seem to be intended for large-scale production and rather targets the market for medium-sized panels aimed at the professional market currently dominated by Sony. The latter mainly produces Oled panels for its Sony Oled Trimaster EL BVM-X300 reference monitor with its 30-inch Oled Ultra HD panel sold for more than € 30,000.

In the meantime, Sharp has opted to facilitate it by integrating Oled LG Display panels for its future Oled consumer televisions. They will still benefit from the expertise of Sharp engineers in video processing. Recall that Sharp televisions available in Europe are manufactured by the Slovak company SKYTEC Universal Media Corporation which exploits the Sharp license for televisions in Europe. We tested the TV Sharp LC-60UI7652E which then benefited from a good quality / price ratio for a 60 inch model.
