Comedian Shane Gillis Returns to SNL as Host
Popular comedian Shane Gillis recently made a comeback by hosting NBC’s
legendary show Saturday Night Live (SNL). This appearance comes after
Gillis was dismissed from the show back in 2019 due to racist, homophobic,
and misogynistic remarks he made.
Gillis Acknowledges Controversial Past in Opening Monologue
Gillis, in his opening monologue during the Feb. 24 episode, addressed
his previous firing, humorously acknowledging the elephant in the room.
Despite the controversy, Gillis confidently delivered his performance,
demonstrating his growth as a comedian.
SNL Producers Regret Overlooking Controversial Remarks
Gillis’ firing in 2019 occurred just a week after he was initially
announced as a cast member. Executive producer Lorne Michaels later
expressed regrets, explaining that they were unaware of Gillis’ offensive
statements during the hiring process. The producers emphasize the
importance of having a diverse range of voices on SNL and apologize for
their failure to properly vet Gillis.
Gillis Reflects on Firing and Expresses Gratitude
Following his dismissal, Gillis took to social media to reflect upon the
situation. He acknowledged the seriousness of the matter, while also
noting his disappointment in not being granted the opportunity to prove
himself on SNL. Gillis expressed gratitude for the chance he was given
and mentioned his future projects.
Gillis Continues his Career Beyond SNL
Despite the setbacks, Gillis persevered and co-hosted the popular podcast
“Matt and Shane’s Secret Podcast.” He has also achieved success with his
Netflix comedy special, “Shane Gillis: Beautiful Dogs,” released in 2023.
Gillis proves that even in the face of controversy, his comedic talent
cannot be undermined.
