SG Weiterstadt as a model

The sustainable redesign of the club’s premises is recognized by the state sports association.

WEITERSTADT – The club area of the sports community Weiterstadt (SGW) is becoming more sustainable. For two years now, green spaces have been transformed into near-natural, ecologically sensible and sustainable green spaces. With the Nabu local group Weiterstadt-Griesheim-Erzhausen, the SGW has the ambitious goal of implementing “biodiversity” on the club’s own premises as a model project. The State Sports Association of Hessen has now awarded the SGW for this.

“The creation of attractive areas with ecologically valuable vegetation for the animal world also has the goal of transferring it to private areas (gardens) and on company premises”, wishes the chairman of Nabu, Wolfgang Krato.

In 2019 the SGW was awarded the “Sustainability Prize of the State Sports Association of Hesse” as one of five clubs. The application for the “Stars of Sports” competition was also successful. The SGW was presented with the “Big Sports Star in Bronze” for exemplary social commitment in the region. In the state decision, the sports community of Weiterstadt was awarded the silver star of sport. “It is an outstanding commitment of a classic sports club to work in this extraordinary way for environmental protection and biodiversity”, praised the Vice President “Sport Development” of the State Sports Association of Hesse, Rolf-Rainer Klatt. The award committee, consisting of representatives from the state sports association, the Darmstadt-Dieburg sports district and the Volks- und Raiffeisenbanken, took into account the involvement of the sports kindergarten when choosing the award winners.

For SGW chairman Michael Gießelbach, it is inevitable that the sports clubs have to take care of the biodiversity on their premises in addition to sports offers. “Clubs have an important role to play in the community. This also includes social commitment and environmental protection. ”

A club could hardly do this with its own resources. The fact that the SGW can realize this project is also due to the generous funding, for example from the Deutsche Postcode Lottery. The money will be used to create an exemplary natural garden by autumn 2021, which is intended to be an example of private gardens and commercial operations.
