Severe Storm Causes Destruction and Flooding in Rincón de Soto, La Rioja

The streak of storms that has been affecting La Rioja for a few weeks ended yesterday viciously and the worst part was taken by Rincón de Soto, where the clouds unloaded with tremendous force, leaving a lot of water and hail as they passed through the municipal area. The virulence with which the storm shook the area left a trail of damage in the form of flooded streets and garages, highways and rail traffic cut off, damage to fruit trees and vineyards, and the overflowing Lodosa canal.

Circulation on the N-232, the LR-115 and rail traffic has already been restored, according to the part of the Government Delegation issued at 8:30 this morning.

The unloading on the corner town began first after four, then continued at half past four and then returned shortly before six. The worst thing was the large amount of water brought by the storms. Also a lot of wind. During the downpour the electricity supply was also cut so the water pumps did not work. The yasa also overflowed, informed the mayor Javier Martínez, who added that it became a real brown river.

The consequences of the waterspout did not take long to become evident in the municipality. The streets were immediately transformed into rivers and rafts with a lot of water, which came to enter some garages. In addition, there were damages to buildings such as the Príncipe Felipe Nursery School and damage to some agricultural pavilions. Civil Protection officers, the Calahorra Fire Brigade and the Rincón de Soto Local Police worked yesterday afternoon to evacuate all the water.

In the fruit trees, damage was also seen due to the hail and fruit lying on the ground in some pear trees that suffered the ravage of the hurricane wind and the rain. The Civil Guard also reported that the Lodosa channel overflowed and caused flooding on the N-232.

The railway traffic was interrupted between Calahorra and Alfaro and Adif was working in the late afternoon to provide alternatives to the affected users. As reported by the Civil Guard, shortly before 10 p.m. there were two passenger trains held in Alfaro and Calahorra, as well as a freight train near Rincón.

In addition, on the N-232, from kilometer 346 to 347,500 a pool of water formed that forced slow circulation. A traffic patrol was sent to the scene to regulate the traffic. The LR-115 had to be cut from the roundabout of the Rincón soccer field.

The storm and hail also affected the municipality of Aldeanueva de Ebro and Igea. In the latter town, the hail damaged farms, cars and trees in the town center and hail fell in the area of Cervera de Río Alhama.

Mayor of Rincón: “This is a disaster, it is a catastrophic area”

The mayor of Rincón de Soto, Javier Martínez Llorente, did not hesitate tonight in describing what happened in his town as “a real disaster.” “This – he added – is a catastrophic zone, it affects the whole town”. The alderman has been surprised by the enormous avalanche of water and mud that has flooded this town of La Rioja and has indicated that “we are still trying to find out what could have happened for such a quantity of water to reach the town.” Something like this “we have never seen it”, has affected Martínez Llorente, whose City Council is already working to find out the real extent of all the damage.
