A Thai soldier shot dead at least 17 people on Saturday in Korat, a city in the northeast of the country, medical and police sources said.

There are “17 dead and 14 injured,” sources of emergency medical services confirmed.

Previously, a police spokesman had reported that there were “more than 10 dead” and many injured.

The aggressor has not been captured and the police look for him in a shopping center that has been shut down.

“The aggressor used a submachine gun to fire at innocent victims. Many of them died or were injured,” the police added.

The perpetrator of the shooting was identified by police as Petty Officer Jakapanth Thomma. The assailant stole a military vehicle and posted photos and videos of him dressed in uniform and shooting in the city of Korat on social media.
