Miguel Alonso Belza, a well-known San Sebastian lawyer and precisely specialized in sexist violence, has been sentenced to seven years in prison by the Spanish Supreme Court for mistreating his ex-partner. This instance confirms the sentences previously handed down at the Gipuzkoa Court against him, which include seven crimes of mistreatment, one of light coercion and the other of injuries.

Alonso Belza was known and recognized as an expert on sexist violence, to the point that he gave courses to the Ertzaintza on this matter. He belonged to the duty shift to attend to these cases. And he came to represent the family of the young Nagore Laffage, victim of one of the most terrible sexist crimes in this century in Euskal Herria, produced in Sanfermines 2008.

The convicted lawyer had a broad professional occupation, since he had taught at the UPV-EHU, belonged to the governing board of the Gipuzkoa Bar Association, was a prominent part of the Basque Institute of Criminology and had participated in ETB gatherings. He also promptly represented the PSE in some court cases.

He was removed from all this after hearing the complaint, in 2017. The sentence now ratified was issued in 2019. The Supreme Court now emphasizes that the sentence imposed is “proportional to the seriousness of the facts.”
