The Nickerie police carried out a joint operation in collaboration with the Trafficking in Persons (TIP) department on Friday 18 June 2021. During this action, the suspect with the initials PF in a case under investigation by TIP, was arrested in Nickerie, the Suriname Police Corps reports.
This suspect, who performed his services as a taxi driver to transport Venezuelan ladies with an illegal status from Nickerie to Paramaribo, has been charged with human smuggling after consultation with the Public Prosecution Service. In this case, the 44-year-old female WW suspect was arrested and detained on Wednesday 9 June.
From June 3, 2021, an investigation is underway against this female suspect in which victims of human trafficking have been liberated from her home in Parmaribo Noord. The raid on Thursday 3 June was also carried out by a mixed team consisting of employees from TIP, Capital Offenses and Fraud and Economic Offenses.
During the joint operation on Friday, June 18, the suspect AB was arrested in a separate case in respect of human smuggling, participation in a criminal organization and violation of the Economic Offenses Act. During an investigation at a location in Nieuw-Nickerie, it turned out that nine Venezuelan ladies were staying at the address, who could not provide proof of legal entry into Suriname.
Nevertheless, AB rented out rooms for these ladies and a bar was operated on site. The suspect AB was unable to provide a valid permit. A consignment of alcoholic beverages found at the scene has been seized. AB has been secured pending the investigation.
Seven of the Venezuelan ladies have been arrested for violating the Aliens Act. In addition to TiP, the Bikers unit West and RBT West participated in this joint operation in Nickerie. The joint operation was led by GPC Nickerie, Chief Inspector of Police Bryan Isaacs writes the police.
