Seven parties work together in Würzburg – without the CSU and SPD – Bavaria

These are stormy times, politically. In Berlin three parties are in the process of getting a common doorbell sign – from experienced opponents to coalition members. With a view to Lower Franconia, of course, this is comparatively unspectacular. Three parties? In Würzburg they are more than just one step further. Seven city council factions and groups have now come together there.

One could say that it is only about a common transport policy. So a partial alliance. But anyone who struggled for air in the valley basin on the Main will suspect that “just” is out of the question. Transport policy is the central theme of the university city.

One might now believe: ah, the very grand coalition on the Main. At least conceptually, that would be quite wrong. After all, the green “Climate Mayor” – a word created from Würzburg – Martin Heilig omitted precisely those two parties for his colorful alliance that are usually associated with the term “grand coalition”. The CSU and SPD do not participate in the Würzburg alliance.

Why? Apparently they weren’t even invited in advance. Instead, political parties whose political affinity is not apparent at first glance. The left and the FDP? Joint ideas are now being developed in Würzburg. The Greens, the ÖDP and the Free Voters? Apparently goes together in the cathedral city. Würzburg list and future for Würzburg? Up to now, one would have thought more of two banks of the Main. Now we row together.

The beginning of the local elections, four and a half years before the same? Everyone yelps, of course: of course not! It’s about content; namely to get as many cars as possible – and therefore surface parking spaces – out of the core city. And yet the Greens naturally put their instruments on the table with their coup.

You can see: In Würzburg, where the Greens won the direct mandate for the state parliament in 2018, majorities are not only possible outside the Union – which provides the mayor there. But even completely without the “people’s parties”.

Specifics of a university town? Clear. But a lot went out from there that later became customary throughout the country.
