“We have always had a problem with those big and thick radiators as you often find them in old houses. When you turned on the heating, they warmed up in the middle, but not on the bottom. This was due to rust and dredging, it turned out. It was too complicated to clean them yourself by draining them and so on. We had it done by a professional “.
Those old stoves often also had a bowl of water. “Stagnant water. Bacteria and fungi love that warm heat. That’s why I always insist on airing, airing, aerating,” says the cleaning expert from The Hague.

New radiators are much easier to clean than old ones. “And almost everyone has a modern one these days, I think. They are made in such a way that they can be cleaned easily. Hit it with the vacuum cleaner from above and below, which removes a lot of dirt. You can remove even more dust with a hairdryer. And then you also have those CV brushes, really incredibly useful. They fold in all directions, so it’s not a problem if your radiator is hidden under the sill. After that you don’t really have to worry about that, the radiator won’t get dirty anymore. “
Do you have a radiator in your kitchen that has become greasy from all the cooking and roasting? “Radiators are often painted and you don’t want to damage anything that is painted. Set it to a temperature below 17 degrees, prepare a light, lean soapy water with a pleasant all-purpose cleaner. This is good enough, don’t mess with all kinds of foaming agents and for God’s sake leave the abrasives out. Clean the radiator and wipe it immediately with a dry cloth. If you don’t, the streaks will burn when you turn it back on. ”You can also do the same with the radiator hoses, says Marja.

Are there still stains that are difficult to remove? “Use an oil, cream, or spray that you can get the hinges to work again, for example. This can dissolve some stains well. Then clean it and dry it again.
According to Marja, the best advice for radiators is the following. “We are so used to putting it at 21 degrees. But now we have to cut spending, we all know that. It is also very good for your health to set the heating at 17 degrees. I love it, I’m a cold girl. When people come to me, they ask me, ‘Mar, do you have a pair of gloves for me?’ “

You can buy a hygrometer that monitors humidity. And buy good, sturdy, green plants. We need to harden a little with those 17 degrees. But I want to see those puddles of brown fat melt away!
