Serious, there are 15 days to go until the nuclear disaster in Ukraine

Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – The Ukrainian nuclear power plant in Zaporizhzhia was completely cut off from the electricity grid after being invaded by Russian troops. This makes it dependent on spare diesel generators, according to the national nuclear power generation company of the Ukrainian state enterprise “Energoatom”.

The company said the last line connecting the power plant to the grid was damaged during filming on Wednesday.

All six reactors had been shut down before the last line was hit, but they still needed constant power to prevent disaster.

Electricity is needed to pump water through the reactor core to keep the reactor cool and avoid nuclear losses.

“Yesterday the last two high-voltage lines in Zaporizhzhia [pembangkit listrik tenaga nuklir] the connection to the Ukrainian electricity grid is faulty. At 11:04, the station went into total blackout mode. All 20 diesel generators have been turned on, ”Energoatom said in a Telegram statement seen by ReutersFriday (11/4/2022)

“In the near future, them [Rusia] will try to repair and connect the communication lines [pembangkit listrik tenaga nuklir Zaporizhzhia] towards the temporarily occupied Crimea and Donbas “.

The plant, which is under the control of the invading Russian army, has been powered by makeshift generators for the past two weeks and now has only 15 days of fuel to run the generators that power the reactors.

Energoatom previously accused Russia of deliberately targeting a substation connected to a Ukrainian power plant.

“Such nuclear extortion by a terrorist state should not be solved by the world community,” said Ukrainian Energy Minister German Galushchenko. “Ukraine needs the protection of the sky over its energy plants.”

Energoatom believes that Russia now wants to connect the nuclear power plant to the Russian grid.
