Serie A: Italy allows football restart on June 20th

The Italian Serie A football season can continue from June 20. Minister of Sport Vincenzo Spadafora said after a conference with representatives of the Italian Football Association (FIGC) and the league. In addition, the remaining cup games are to be played from June 13. The official statement by the Italian Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte is still awaited.

“Italy is starting the restart, and therefore it is right that football should also start again,” Italian media minister Sport Spadafora quoted: “The technical-scientific committee approved the protocol and the association assured me that it had a plan B and one Has plan C. Given these considerations, the championship can resume on June 20th. “

These alternative plans are obviously a possible play-off mode if the league operations have to pause again. Should the situation in Italy worsen again and make a continuation impossible, the season would end at the current level and league leaders Juventus (63 points, pursuer Lazio has 62) would be champions.

According to the hygiene and safety concept recently adopted by the football association, around 300 people have access to the stadium, as in Germany. The players on each team should also undergo regular tests and be driven to the stadiums on two buses.

The championship was interrupted due to the corona crisis on March 9th. Teams in Italy have been able to train again since last week. Twelve game days are still missing until the end of the season. With 33,000 fatalities, Italy is among the countries most affected by the pandemic.

The sequel was controversial in Serie A.

Serie A had been the subject of controversial debate about whether to continue or not. The President Brescia Calcio, Massimo Cellino, spoke out strictly against a readmission. He had announced in early April that he would no longer compete out of respect for the city’s citizens and their relatives killed by the virus.

But now the way is also paved in Italy. The Bundesliga has been playing again since May 16. So far, it is the only major sports league in the world that has continued to operate. Now more leagues follow. In the evening, the English Premier League had already announced that it wanted to play again from June 17th – without spectators.

In Spain, the game could resume on 11 June with the derby between Real Betis and Sevilla FC. In France, however, Ligue 1 had been abandoned as the first major league. Team sports are prohibited there until at least June 21. This was announced by French Prime Minister Edouard Philippe in the evening.
