Sennheiser Momentum True Wireless 2 in the test

Compared to Apple’s AirPods Pro, Sennheiser has designed its new wireless headphones more traditionally. They look a bit bulbous and round, how in-ear headsets have been looking for a long time. Nevertheless, the designers managed to convey the brand clearly: the company logo is emblazoned on both headphones on the sensor surface, which is clearly visible from the outside. It’s not quite as succinct as the Apple look, but if you know a little bit, you know immediately that someone is listening to music here who is willing to spend a little more on it.

Because at a price of 299 euros, the Momentum True Wireless 2 is even more expensive than the AirPods Pro. From April it will be available in black and white.

The sound

You get a completely different sound than Apple. Whether you like it is a matter of taste. Compared to the AirPods Pro, the sound of the Sennheiser headphones looks much rounder, softer and warmer. You can hear that clearly in the song “The Sinking Feeling” from “The The”. The very mixed bass sounds much harder with Apple’s headphones than with the Momentum True Wireless 2.

If you are used to the sound of the AirPods, it can initially appear as if someone had wrapped the headphones in a cloth. But you quickly realize that nothing is missing and nothing is dull. Only the sound character is completely different. The Sennheiser rather have a noble feel-good sound that is more reminiscent of the indirect sound of speakers than the very direct sound of the Apple headphones. Songs like “Serious” from “The Whitest Boy Alive” are heard very relaxed and calm.

The silence

That is exactly the impression that shapes the sound experience for me. After a week of wearing the Momentum True Wireless 2 a lot on the subway and walking, I find its sound extremely pleasant, precisely because it is so unobtrusive. They are headphones that you like to listen to a little longer.

This is also helped by the active noise suppression, which effectively hides the rumble of the trains and the babble of the people sitting next to you in the Hamburg subway. I couldn’t test how well this works on a plane or long-distance train. It is not the time for long journeys.

At every turn

With the supplied soft silicone caps, the Sennheiser does not sit perfectly, but it does sit well in my ears. Four different sizes are included, but unfortunately no foam adapters, which usually ensure a good fit. If you are used to the AirPods Pro, it is noticeable when walking that the impact sound with the Sennheisers in the ear is annoying. It is better to hear them sitting down.

Sennheiser specifies the battery life as seven hours, which in my experience seems plausible. All the more so since the headphones are automatically charged in their transport box. Up to 28 hours of runtime should be achievable without the box having to be plugged in between.

Unfortunately, this is not possible wirelessly, as with Apple’s headphones. A USB-C cable for charging is included, a charger is not, but that’s okay, most people have had enough of it by now, and the USB socket on a computer does the same.

A lot of functions

Some functions of the headset can be controlled via Sennheiser’s Smart Control app. For example, the so-called “transparent hearing”, which transmits external noise to the ears via the microphones, which is important, for example, in traffic. There is also an unusual equalizer here, whose mode of operation can be varied with just one control.

The most important thing is the ability to determine the function of the sensor fields on the outside of the headphones. After all, up to four functions can be set per page. For example: three taps on the right switch on the noise suppression, four taps on the left fast-forward to the next track. However, this can be confusing.

Conclusion

The sound is what makes the Sennheiser Momentum True Wireless 2 so special. If you like a warm, balanced sound, you won’t find anything better in this price range. Especially since the noise cancellation also makes a good impression. The only noticeable thing is the clearly perceptible impact sound.

During the phone call, it was also annoying in the test that I could only hear my own voice indirectly, even though the “Sidetone” function was activated. So you lose the feeling of how loud you actually speak. The Momentum True Wireless 2 are great for listening to music, I would prefer to make calls with other headsets.
