Second half secures Gladiators victory against Paderborn | 5 FOUR

After the second quarantine break of the RÖMERSTROM Gladiators Trier, the University of Baskets Paderborn traveled to the Moselle today. The guests played three more games and, like the hosts, scored eight wins. In order to extend the indirect lead and to stay on the playoff places, the Gladiators wanted to celebrate a comeback victory. After an increase in performance in the second half, this clearly succeeded in the end with a 102: 82.

Trier. After a longer break, the Gladiators Trier begin with Kevin Smit, Chase Adams, Thomas Grün, Jonathan Dubas and Brody Clarke. The latter completes his first minutes in the ProA and indicates with the first four points what potential the team had to miss so far. However, there is probably not enough air for a long time.

The game starts with few points. After more than five minutes the score is 6: 2. At times this is due to aggressive defense, especially the gladiators across the field. However, one does not see any great moments in basketball either. Trier itself hits only one of the first ten attempts at three. And the numerous offensive rebounds only pay off to a limited extent. Austin Wiley’s chronic economies of scale can hardly be exploited. At the end of the quarter it is 14:17 for the guests who rotate a lot.

Lean food in the 1st half

In the second part of the game, the gladiators manage better to hit their distance throws. The rate is approaching normal, but there is no danger from the zone. The guests from Paderborn now have a lot more to offer. Like in the textbook, Tom Alte dots Drew Cushingberry’s passport via Alley Oop at 25:27. And because he liked it so much, Alte added two more points after a fast break with a push-pull lay-up. For a short time, coach Marco van den Berg reacts with zone defense, which you don’t often see with him. At the end of the half-time it goes tied with 37:37 in the locker room. A little indicative of the game: Both teams only score four points from the free-throw line (Gladiators with five attempts, Paderborn ten).

During the half-time break, van den Berg seems to have raised the issue of “exploiting the economies of scale” again. The 211 centimeters plus octopus arms are consequently searched for and found using praise passes. Wiley scores nine points in the quarter alone. But not only he succeeds more and more. After the 50:47 in the meantime, the gladiators are continuously expanding their lead. Before the last ten minutes, the cushion looks very reassuring (72:56).

Gladiators pass high, Paderborn cannot oppose anything

Meanwhile, the situation does not change. Austin Wiley remains the 1st option and can hardly be stopped. The game is not creative, it is even more efficient. But even if he is substituted, Paderborn does not manage to melt the residue. Even the 24 points from Joseph Benzinger at the end of the day don’t help – just one of two double-digit points for them Baskets to meet. In addition to the meanwhile dominance on the board, Trier does not lose confidence in the three, the rate is a good 41 percent in the end. Kevin Smit is in a particularly good mood. In just 20 minutes he scores four out of nine long-range throws.

On the scoreboard at the end there is a clear 102: 82. The blatant rebound superiority (54:22) compensates for some of the manageable offensive strengths. A good sign: Austin Wiley is not the top rebounder with nine rebounds. Returning Brody Clarke collects five offensive and five defensive rebounds. Let’s see if the leaders of the table will be back on Sunday.

Chase Adams (10); Kevin Smit (13); Rupert Hennen (6); Jonas Grof (3, 7 Assists); Thomas Grün (13); Jonathan Almstedt (n. e.); Brody Clarke (6, 10 Rebounds), Matthew Freeman (12); Robert Nortmann (1); Vincent Hennen (0); Jonathan Dubas (15); Austin Wiley (21)
