SEC Twitter Account Compromised: False Approval of Bitcoin ETF

For a moment it seemed as if the Bitcoin ETF had been approved by the SEC. The financial watchdog shared (a now deleted) message on X that the Bitcoin ETF has been approved.

Below is a screenshot of the message.

Hack at social media SEC

Today, the SEC approves Bitcoin ETFs for listing on all registered national securities exchanges. The approved Bitcoin ETFs will be subject to ongoing monitoring and compliance measures to ensure continued investor protection,” the SEC said.

“I didn’t expect them to release the news this way, but this is indeed an official report,” said James Seyffart, ETF analyst at Bloomberg.

We neither.

But it looks like the SEC account has been hacked, say Gary Gensler, Chairman of the SEC:

“The SEC Twitter account was compromised and an unauthorized tweet was posted. The SEC has not approved the listing and trading of spot bitcoin exchange-traded products.”

Bitcoin price jumps up and down

If you put your magnifying glass on the price, you will see the initial rise, the joy of approval. But very soon afterwards you also see the disappointment. If graphs could tell stories, they would blow your mind.

Take a look at the last part of the Bitcoin graph below. The price goes up and down even faster than the emotions of an adolescent after his first kiss.

Tension and sensation

Who says crypto is boring? Go figure: the market has been waiting for months for a possible Bitcoin ETF in the US. The only one that has a say in this is the SEC. The SEC’s X account is temporarily taken over to share news that the Bitcoin ETF has been approved.

Gary Gensler then looks at his phone and is shocked. The director feels forced to admit that the social media account of his government agency has been compromised and reports on X that the Bitcoin ETF has not been approved after all.

The to-the-moon 🚀 parties will have to wait a little longer.
