The new graphics cards are about to be presented and the rumors have exploded. Among so many contradictory information and some, a bit absurd, there are some realistic information. Seasonic has shown an image of a PCIe 8 + 8-pin to PCIe 12-pin connector adapter from the NVIDIA RTX 3000. This confirms the rumor from a few weeks ago that spoke of a new connector for these new graphics.
It seems that NVIDIA has decided to change the power connector for a more modern and more powerful one. Seasonic on the box indicates that it is an “NVIDIA 12-pin PCIe Molex Micro-Fit 3.0 connector” adapter. A 12-pin connector that at the moment only NVIDIA would use and that will require manufacturers to release adapter kits.
Seasonic confirms the new NVIDIA RTX 3000 power connector
The 12-pin PCIe connector has the peculiarity that it works at a voltage of 12V. To introduce this voltage and these adapters, the elements on the PCB have been completely modified. One particularity is that this 12-pin connector is the same width as a system with two 6 + 6-pin PCIe connectors.
Currently the 6 + 6-pin connectors offer a current of 6A with a total power of 400W. This new unified 12-pin connector supplies a current of 8.5A for a power of 600W.
As a major drawback, there are still no compatible power supplies with this new connector. This forces manufacturers, such as Seasonic, to launch adapters to be able to supply voltage to these graphics. A major disadvantage is that this new cable must use the 20AWG specifications, being somewhat more expensive.
We do not know at this time what will happen with the most advanced models of the assemblers. It is no longer uncommon to see graphics with an 8 + 8 + 8 pin PCIe power configuration. There is very little left for NVIDIA to reveal all the Ampere data to us.
