That could have ended badly: Shortly before 9 a.m. on Tuesday morning, a sculpture came loose from its figural niche at St. Oswald’s Church in the middle of Zug and crashed, along with its console, onto the forecourt of the church. As the Zug Catholic parish reports, no one was injured.

The parish writes as the reason for the incident: “The so-called ‘acid rain’ and the strong weather influences have probably accelerated the aging process of the sandstone, so that the console and the figure detached from the facade.”

Remaining sculptures are now being checked

Various experts were on site shortly after the event. The area around the buttresses has been cordoned off. Scaffolding will be erected in the coming days. An experienced stone sculptor and restorer would promptly inspect the remaining seven sculptures.

The body of the sculpture was not completely broken, but the head, the limbs and the church, which Saint Wolfgang carries with him as an attribute, suffered, writes the Catholic parish of Zug. According to the church, the figure of Saint Wolfgang is one of eight sculptures that decorate the niches of the two buttresses in the area of the west facade. These were made by Jean Salvadè von Caslano and various stone sculptors from Zug in the construction works near St. Oswald.

Assembly approves various renovation projects and permanent café

The parish also announced that the parish meeting also took place on Tuesday. The 2024 budget and the 2025-2027 financial plan were approved. The assembly also approved various infrastructure projects. For example, a loan of 100,000 francs for the purchase of an exhibition display case in the Maria Hilf chapel, a loan of 70,000 francs for renovations at the St. Michael parish center and a loan of 400,000 francs for renovations at the Gut Hirt parish center.

According to the announcement, the parish assembly also approved the permanent operation of the “d’Bauhütte” café. This was originally intended to be a three-year project. However, it quickly became a popular ecumenical meeting place in Zug’s old town. “This has created a regular meeting place for many Zug residents – which now exists permanently,” the parish writes in conclusion.
