“In the United States, mistakes had happened in that factory. The US government then decided to destroy the mixed vaccines. The European governments then ruled that they would keep productions from that factory, which may have the same problem, under lock and key for the time being. Now it is clear that they will definitely not be released,” explains Health Minister Frank Vandenbroucke (Vooruit) in “De Morgen”.
Only 450,000 doses
This means that there is another serious delay for the vaccination campaign in our country. “We had hoped at the very beginning to have 1.4 million doses of the Johnson & Johnson vaccine by the end of June. But by the end of June we will only have 450,000. That was already partly in our planning, we no longer assumed that 1.4 million for a long time. But it may mean a delay of three weeks,” said Vandenbroucke.
He’s worried, the minister, but don’t panic. “There is no reason to, even if we don’t know what we will get in July. Caution remains the message for people who have not yet received two doses of the vaccine. They remain vulnerable to the Indian variant. They can also be carriers and spreaders of the virus.”
