Screenwriters Strike in The Netherlands in Support of Global Day of Action for Fair Compensation

Screenwriters in the Netherlands are also going on strike on Wednesday. They join the global day of action, which is also organized to support striking members of the Writers Guild of America.

Screenwriters in the United States have stopped working since May 2 because of dissatisfaction with the fees they receive from major streaming services such as Netflix.

The fight for fair compensation and protection against these global streaming companies affects us all.

According to the union, hardly any money is paid to Dutch makers by the streaming services. That while the makers allow their films, series and other projects to be released digitally and can therefore be seen on more channels.

The Network of Screenwriters of the Authors’ Union and the Dutch Directors Guild will meet on Wednesday at 11 a.m. in the Eye Filmmuseum in Amsterdam.

Around twenty countries worldwide, including Ireland, Germany, South Korea and Ukraine, participate in Screenwriters Everywhere. With this day of action, they hope to convince the major players in the film field, such as Netflix and Amazon, that screenwriters should be paid better.

Hollywood has been on strike for almost a month and a half now. The streaming services and movie companies have not yet reached out to the screenwriters to discuss the issue.
