Scientists Make Flying Saucers to Explore Asteroids and the Moon

Thursday, December 30, 2021 – 16:41 WIB

VIVA – Scientists conceptualize a rover or a lightweight rover in the shape of a UFO that can float across the surface Month and asteroid.

This flying saucer will be powered by an electric field that is formed due to direct exposure to the Sun and the surrounding plasma.

This exposure to the Sun creates a charge that can levitate dust more than a meter above the Moon’s surface and allow humans to harness the energy.

The rover will be made of a material called Mylar. Small ion beams will be used to fill the vehicle and increase the payload naturally to defy gravity.

“With a floating rover, you don’t have to worry about wheels or moving parts,” said Scientist Paulo Lozano of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), as quoted from the website. Science Alert, Thursday, December 30, 2021.

Meanwhile, the terrain on asteroids can be so uneven that scientists have to keep the rover under control and keep it afloat.

That way they could traverse extremely rough and unexplored terrain without physically dodging the asteroid’s surface.
