A white balloon hovers over the freezing plain of the South Pole. It carries an observatory called ANITA, which can detect sprays of cosmic ray particles. But she recently picked up two unexpected signals. They seemed to come straight from the ice.
Since 2010, scientists have been working on the almost impossible. To find elementary particles of extremely low mass, which are formed during nuclear reactions. Neutrinos, as they are called, have zero electric charge. Therefore, they practically do not react with the environment and it is very difficult to detect them.

Neutrinos are among the basic particles in the universe that were born during the Big Bang. For example, low-energy particles are produced by the sun. High-energy neutrinos come from black holes or supernovae. Once formed, they pass through stars, planets and entire galaxies.
Mysterious neutrino
For astrophysicists, they mean potential messengers carrying information from the site of their “space maternity ward.” Even though they are almost invisible, they collide with the molecule here and there. This is best recognized in transparent and dense material, such as ice.

That’s why the IceCube neutrino observatory was exhibited in Antarctica, whose vast light-sensitive detection system extends to a depth of almost three kilometers. He is assisted by the Impulsive Transient Antenna, or ANITA, an observation station suspended on a helium balloon about 40 kilometers high, which studies neutrinos coming from space. It was ANITA that picked up two signals that came incomprehensibly from the Earth’s surface from an unknown source. In addition, the particles interacted better with other atoms.

Where did the new radiation come from? Scientists still have no idea. “IceCube and ANITA complement each other. Each anomaly is detected by both devices. However, this did not happen in this case, “explains Anastasia Barbano of the University of Geneva.” In this way, we can rule out the idea that the events came from a single point. “
Parallel World and Antarctica
Among the exciting hypotheses is that experts have discovered the signal of a completely new particle that is able to pass through the Earth without leaving Cherenkov’s radiation, or that the radiation comes from a parallel universe that is exactly “mirror” to ours.

But one of the main authors of the research article on the Antarctic experiment, Ibrahim Safa of the University of Wisconsin-Madison, rejects. “We made a mistake somewhere,” he says. His colleague Alex Pizzuto agrees. He said the ice structure might have changed, but that would disrupt the whole experiment.
