A team from the University of Cambridge’s Wellcome Sanger Institute and Cambridge University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust have speculated that a type of white blood cell known as a macrophage, some of which contain the IL1B gene, is ‘critical in tumor development’.

The authors of this new study, which was published in Cancer cellargue that targeting these IL1B macrophages could help treat renal cell carcinoma, and that existing drugs originally designed to prevent lung cancer could be used for it.

“I’m optimistic that targeting IL1B macrophages could give us a way to treat renal cell carcinoma without having to have surgery,” said Dr. Thomas Mitchell, senior author of the new study, was quoted in a press release from Cambridge University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.

While the researchers have yet to prove their hypothesis through clinical trials, they are already exploring this new option.
