Scientists Develop Potential ‘Super Weapon’ Against Cancer Using Click Chemistry

Researchers at University College London and Stanford University in the United States may have laid the foundations for a new cancer therapy. The scientists put together three proteins “that click together like Lego bricks” to develop a potential ‘super weapon’ against the disease.

The researchers used ‘click chemistry’, in which certain molecules are linked together to become stronger together. The particles click together like Lego blocks, so to speak. Click chemistry has been around since 2001, but the method has evolved in recent years. In 2022, the creators of click chemistry won the Nobel Prize in Chemistry.

The scientists at University College and Stanford have now succeeded in linking three types of proteins, or proteins, that together can form a powerful superweapon against cancer, it sounds.

“Next Generation Anti-Cancer Drugs”

In concrete terms, this involves a cocktail of three components: the first molecule attaches to the cancer cell, the second attracts a T cell or a type of white blood cell that is needed to attack the cancer cell, and the third destroys part of the cancer cell’s defense system, which hides behind certain sugars.

According to lead researcher Peter Szijj, the use of the third molecule was particularly effective in killing breast cancer cells. This enzyme, which has only recently entered cancer research, has the potential to form the basis of next-generation anti-cancer agents. The researchers emphasize that the experiments were carried out in a petri dish and that the method has not yet been tested on humans.
