Scientist reveals how coronavirus is fundamentally different from influenza virus

The imminent emergence of a new strain of coronavirus is almost unbelievable

Head of the Cell Proliferation Laboratory at the Engelhardt Institute of Molecular Biology of the Russian Academy of Sciences Pyotr Chumakov spoke about the important difference between coronavirus and influenza in an interview with URA.RU.

According to the specialist, the coronavirus mutates much longer than the influenza virus, and therefore it is not worth expecting rapid mutations, due to which it will be necessary to be vaccinated frequently. As for the flu, a new variant emerges every year. At the same time, for the coronavirus, such a scenario is incredible, since it works differently, the scientist claims.

Chumakov noted that influenza viruses can “constantly exchange with each other and give some variations,” and the coronavirus has a single genome, and therefore the appearance of a new strain is almost incredible. Thanks to this fact, the COVID-19 vaccine will work for a long time, providing good protection, the expert said.

Formerly British medics reported about finding a new type of coronavirus. The new strain is likely to spread faster from person to person, said the country’s health minister, Matt Hancock, during a speech in parliament.

According to the latest information, there are 2,681,256 cases of coronavirus infection in Russia, 2,124,797 patients have recovered, and 47,391 have died.
