Wiesbaden (dpa / lhe) – According to the state government, the “afternoon pact” reaches almost every fifth elementary school student in Hesse. The participation rate in the current school year is 18.76 percent, said the Ministry of Education in response to a parliamentary request from SPD MP Christoph Degen. In addition, there are 926 all-day schools – in Hesse there are different levels for this, from an afternoon program on at least three days to all-day school. 451 general education schools are currently not participating in the all-day program.

In addition, the afternoon pact is intended to ensure reliable educational and support services for primary school pupils; its implementation began in the 2015/2016 school year. According to the information, 299 schools are currently participating in the care model, with a total of 63 percent of the students participating. In the past school year, 52 of the schools demanded contributions from parents for the period up to 2.30 p.m., which ranged from 5 to 90 euros per month nationwide. For the period after 2.30 p.m., 218 schools charged between 5 and 178 euros per month.

The state government’s plan to convert the “afternoon pact” into a “day-long pact” is currently being implemented by twelve schools, the ministry said. They alternate between education and supervision from 7.30 a.m. to 2.30 p.m. in order to better interlink lessons and offers for individual support.
