School at home until at least May – now with new school material instead of repetition.
Vienna. ÖVP Minister of Education Heinz Faßmann wants to open the schools for teaching again “step by step”. But when the first step will be taken is still in the stars.
Homeschooling. “Realistically speaking” there will be no regular school operations until the end of April, said Fassmann on Tuesday. The teachers have to put together new work orders, which the children do alone or with the help of their parents.
School supplies. To make matters worse, the teachers can now decide “autonomously at school” whether new material is also included. Faßmann recommends this only in “less explanatory subjects”, such as geography, not in mathematics.
Schoolwork. What happens to the many missed schoolwork and tests? Good news for the students: they don’t have to be made up for.

Matura. Faßmann makes the decision when the Matura takes place after Easter. So far it was said: not before May 18. It is quite possible that this date will be postponed even further. The minister promises: “Everyone can graduate.” A Matura without an exam is currently not planned.
When is school again? What is certain is that the school leavers are the first to come back to school. If the Matura starts on May 18th, they could start school again on May 4th. Then more students could follow. If the number of Corona cases continues to rise sharply, it may also be that the schools remain closed until autumn.
