Schools become the new Covid-19 cluster, this is the task force’s explanation

Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia– The government allows face-to-face learning for schools located in the green and yellow zones, with a series of preparatory steps. However, in recent times there have been reports that transmission in schools has actually increased and become a new cluster.

Spokesperson for the Covid-19 Task Force Wiku Adisasmito said the new clusters were discovered because several regions had the ability to record cases and were specific in certain areas, especially in big cities. Some of the areas that had better registration and testing skills had cluster records from settlements, markets, places of worship, offices and recently schools.

“The schools that are opened are schools from the green zoning, as well as the yellow zone, but the process of opening face-to-face schools must be carried out in stages, preconditioning processes, the right timing, the right priorities, and consultation between the regional and central Task Force, as well as monitoring evaluation,” he said. Wiku, Thursday (13/08/2020).

In addition, if there are new clusters in schools, according to him, the opening process is not yet perfect. In starting face-to-face learning activities, parents need approval, and it must be ensured that transportation to the school is adequate so that they can maintain a good distance. Likewise, the community must be properly guarded so that no disease is brought from home to school.

“If the increase in cases is high and begins to get out of control, braking must be done and even stop the social activities,” said Wiku.

Wiku explained that for 30 days, from July 13 to August 12 the number of active cases in Indonesia tended to decline. The Task Force noted that there were 39,290 active cases or 29.85%, and it was below the world standard of 30.5%. Active cases mean cases that are still being treated either in hospital or in independent isolation.

The number of active cases was also much reduced compared to July 13, 2020 when active cases were still 47.59%, on August 3 33.23%, and on August 12, 29.85%. Even though active cases have decreased, Wiku emphasized that the community must still be vigilant because it can still increase in the future if they are careless and do not implement health protocols.

Currently, there are 9 districts / cities with more than 1,000 active cases, with the highest rate being Central Jakarta with 2,213 people, then North Jakarta 1,775 people, and Semarang City 1,681 people. While the others, the city of Makassar 1,511 people, Medan City 1,377 people, South Jakarta 1,309 people, East Jakarta 1,305 people, Surabaya City 1,283 people, and West Jakarta 1,268 people.

“It can be seen that this area is an urban area with a dense population. What needs to be our attention is not to be careless. Keep trying so that this active case can be tackled together and catch up with other city districts that are able to reduce their active cases,” said Wiku.
