“School Bus Drivers in Outaouais Region Go on Strike over Unfair Wages and Inhumane Conditions”

The Teamsters union announced a strike by school bus drivers in the Outaouais region on Monday, due to employers’ refusal to return to the bargaining table.

Some 197 school bus drivers from Autobus Lasalle and Bigras Transport are on strike to demand better wages taking into account inflation, as well as more humane working conditions.

Students at the Portage and Hauts-Bois school service centres, the Western Québec School Board and St-Joseph (Hull) and St-Alexandre (Gatineau) colleges will be affected by the bus drivers’ walkout.

About 100 bus drivers affiliated with the same local union branch of the Teamsters will be on strike starting Wednesday, if their employer, Autobus Campeau, refuses to reach a fair agreement.

“We hope employers will return to the bargaining table with a renewed commitment to reaching a fair deal, and we remain ready to work together to find a solution,” Teamsters Canada President Francois Laporte said.

“We will continue to fight for fair wages and working conditions that reflect their essential role in our community,” said Jean Chartrand, president of Teamsters Local 106.
