New York City celebrates Immigrant Heritage Month with various community events that honor the diversity of immigrants and their contribution to the city.

Immigrant Heritage Month (IHM), originally launched in 2014, is a month-long celebration that allows communities to explore their own heritage and celebrate the city’s shared diversity. Throughout the month, the Big Apple highlights the endless contributions, rich histories and unique cultures of the city’s diverse immigrant communities.

During this month-long celebration, which begins Wednesday, June 1, the Mayor’s Office of Immigrant Affairs (MOIA) is proud to honor and celebrate the invaluable contributions of immigrant New Yorkers. , who have unswervingly moved New York City forward. That’s why this year’s theme is Immigrant New York: Rebuilding Together.

During this month IHM includes in-person and virtual events organized by community partners. Poster art was created by Raul Colón an award-winning illustrator of Puerto Rican descent of many picture books, including Draw!, an ALA Notable Book and winner of the International Latino Book Award; Imagine!

Among the events scheduled for the month of June, they celebrate different cultures. Among those:

  1. One with the Dominican Cultural Civic Center on June 11 and its event Arts Crafts and Health Fair, a true celebration of the West Harlem community open to the entire family. It will promote health and healing through music, poetry, arts and crafts. It’s redistricting time and our elected officials will be making appearances. There will be a ScanVan to provide free mammograms to women over 40 years of age. It will take place in 619 West 145th Street from 9:00 am – 2:00 pm
  2. The Midori & Friends event with AURELIO will be held at the Queens Library on June 16. Singer-songwriter, guitarist and percussionist Aurelio Martínez is one of the most talented performers in Central America. Born in Honduras, the artist is known for his powerful and evocative voice and his role as a great bearer of the tradition of Garífuna culture and music.
  3. Mano a Mano: Mexican Culture Without Borders: Evening of live music and art. Enjoy a performance by singer-songwriter Marilyn Castillo while enjoying tamales and a painting workshop with local artist Andrea Arroyo inspired by the exhibition American Travelers: A Watercolor Journey Through Spain, Portugal, and Mexico. Taste of Mexico celebrates and explores elements of Mexican culture and its influence on New York City. The event has three components: art, music and food. Attendees are invited to experience the flavors, colors, sounds, and smells of Mexico as they engage in art creation through an artisan workshop and taste a sample of its cuisine. It will be held at the Hispanic Society Museum and Library Broadway at 3:00 p.m.
