Schalke 04 loses to Werder – deeper into the crisis

The situation at FC Schalke 04 is becoming increasingly precarious. The team lost to Bremen for a quarter in a row – increasing the pressure on coach David Wagner. Werder was happy about a dream goal.

Schalke 04 stumbles from one bankrupt to the next despite another goalkeeper change. With a well-deserved 0-1 loss to Werder Bremen, the Royal Blues extended their black streak to eleven games without a threesome and slipped to tenth place. Leonardo Bittencourt scored the decisive goal (32nd) in favor of the Bremen, who with seven points from the last three games draw new hope for relegation. The once again frighteningly weak Schalke conceded the fourth defeat in the fourth game after the restart.

The interplay in goal did not help either. Coach David Wagner had once again put the future Munich Alexander Nübel between the posts and thus made the fourth change of the season in this position. Bremen, equipped with considerably more self-confidence, controlled everything from the first minute. As in Düsseldorf, Schalke retreated far and had Werder combined. The scene applause and the cheering from the Bremen substitutes and supervisors made it clear who invested more. On Schalke’s side, only Nübel could be heard with his instructions.

Schalke’s efforts are not rewarded

With 0: 1, the returnee was powerless: Bittencourt circled the ball over him into the net. The goal was initiated by Jean-Clair Todibo, who had changed the ball against Davy Klaassen at the center line. A Weston McKennie header was the first sign of Schalke’s life (37th). But the guests remained game-determining.

The hosts’ first serious chance of scoring came in the 53rd minute through substitute Benito Raman. Schalke now invested more and made the game more open, but was not energetic enough for a turn.

Hertha wins again, Wolfsburg fails

FC Augsburg meanwhile lost 0: 2 (0: 1) to Hertha BSC and now occupies 14th place – also because Eintracht Frankfurt passed 2: 1 (1: 0) at VfL Wolfsburg. Javairo Dilrosun scored the tenth goal in Berlin under new coach Bruno Labbadia in the 23rd minute. Krzysztof Piatek secured the victory (90. + 3). As provisional ninth in the table, Hertha should be rid of the biggest relegation worries and even have chances of qualifying for the European Cup.

In Wolfsburg, VfL professional Josip Brekalo failed after a counterattack by Eintracht goalkeeper Kevin Trapp (20th). On the other hand, Frankfurt was awarded a penalty by Marin Pongracic to striker André Silva, which the Portuguese converted himself (27th). Kevin Mbabu (58.) managed to equalize, but Daichi Kamada (85.) achieved another Eintracht lead. Frankfurt’s Lucas Torro saw the yellow-red card in the final phase (90. + 5).

Mainz 05 also played as table 15. 0: 1 (0: 1) against TSG Hoffenheim and is only three points ahead of Bremen. The FSV actually came into play well against Hoffenheim, and goalkeeper Florian Müller saved a penalty from Steven Zuber (27th). The decisive goal was scored by Hoffenheim substitute striker Ihlas Bebou (43.).
