Kindergarten in the White House! Donald Trump (73) suddenly aborts a press conference on Monday evening, literally leaving journalists stunned in the rose garden of the White House. But what has angered the US President so much that he literally throws his prime time out of the window? It was the journalists – from Kindergarten Trump’s perspective.
–
But from the beginning: Trump started his press conference with the usual pinch of self-praise. He was optimistic that the Corona crisis was “under control”. Trump did not tire of mentioning what a great job his government had done during his speech.
–
But (unfortunately) the numbers do not prove him right. The corona virus is far from being under control in many parts of the country. Over ten countries continue to report increasing numbers of cases. For example, the capital Washington or the bordering states of Maryland and Virginia. The United States still has between 1,000 and 2,000 deaths per day – with the exception of Sundays, which, due to the way they are counted, show significantly lower numbers of cases. The country has almost 1.4 million confirmed corona infections and over 80,000 deaths. More than anywhere else.

Even Jared Kushner wears a mask – only Trump doesn’t
Trump began to “numb” for the first time when the journalists in the Q&A session discussed the rise in corona cases in the White House. Last week, a Trump employee and Vice President Mike Pence’s spokeswoman (60) tested positive for the corona virus. In response, the government introduced a mask requirement for all public areas of the government headquarters. The building is right next to the White House, and employees have been advised to avoid visits to Trump’s home if possible.
–
While son-in-law and presidential adviser Jared Kushner (39) obediently followed the government’s new measures and appeared at the press conference with a protective mask, Trump came topless. Not necessarily a breach of the rule, since he was standing on a podium in the rose garden – at a safe distance from employees and journalists. But he obviously doesn’t want to be a role model. «It is not necessary for me to wear a mask. I’m not that close to anyone, »he said.
–
Trump also decided not to wear a mask during a trip to the state of Arizona last week. As early as April, when the CDC health agency recommended Americans to wear masks in public, Trump immediately distanced himself from it. He would not wear a mask, it was a voluntary measure, not a regulation, he said.
–
Racism or misunderstanding?
Then it got bizarre. The CBS journalist Weijia Jiang, an Asian poll, asked Trump: «You have often said that the United States performed far better than any other country in the corona tests. Why is that important? Why is it a global competition for you if Americans still lose their lives every day and we still see more cases every day? »
–
Trump replied that there were deaths worldwide, not only in the United States. Then he said: “And maybe that’s a question you should ask China. Don’t ask me. Ask China this question, okay? If you ask them this question, you may get a very unusual answer. »
–
For the US President, the matter was over; he was already calling another reporter when the CBS journalists spoke up again. A little perplexed, she asked: “Sir, why are you saying this to me?” What Trump became visibly angry about: “I say this to everyone who asks such a mean question.” Weijia Jiang persisted, insisting that this was “not a common question”.
–
This conversation was subsequently portrayed as a scandal in several US media. The tenor: Trump deliberately referred the woman with obviously Asian roots to China and is said to have behaved racially.
–
Cancellation of the press conference
The press conference was not over at this point. Trump no longer responded to journalist Jiang’s comment, exasperatedly asking: “Anyone else?” A CNN journalist then approached the microphone – the woman Trump had already called. When the US President spotted her, he obviously regretted his decision. “Please keep going, backwards,” he said to her.
–
But journalist Kaitlan Collins did not back off, saying into the microphone: «I have two questions. You pointed to me. » Trump hissed: «I did. And you didn’t answer, and now I’m going to call the other young lady in the back. » The CNN journalist protested one last time: “But I just wanted to let my colleague finish speaking” – with reference to Weijia Jiang.
–
The US president already had enough. He cut her off. «Ladies and gentlemen, thank you very much. I really appreciate that, thank you very much. » Then he turned his back on the journalists and ran away – back to the safe, warm room of the White House. Where no uncomfortable questions are asked.
