Scaffolding for the Brussels Courthouse of Justice itself needs to be replaced after 40 years of renovation | NOW

The facade renovation of the Palace of Justice in Brussels is now taking so long that even the scaffolding that has been around the building for forty years is due for replacement, Belgian media report.

The Belgian government is reportedly allocating 1.5 million euros to replace the old scaffolding with new ones. The scaffolding has now been in place for so long that they would no longer be safe for workers working on the building.

The refurbishment of the iconic building in the center of Brussels has now become a prayer without end. For example, the renovation has been delayed in recent years due to scaffolding that was rusting due to neglect and earlier after it became apparent that the scaffolding had been placed illegally at the time.

The Belgian newspaper The last news (HLN) reports that worn elements and planks will be replaced in the near future. The anchors are also reinforced in some places.

When the scaffolding has been replaced, the renovation can continue. Spokesperson Johan Vanderborght of the Public Buildings Agency tells the GARDEN that this will take a few more years. There are three more phases to complete.

If everything goes according to plan, the facades should be restored by 2030. After about half a century, the Palace of Justice will finally be released from its ‘iron chains’.
