“On Thursday, a Maritime Border Guard patrol detected three Iranian ships entering Saudi waters. They were immediately followed and repeated warnings were issued to stop them, but they refused to respond,” the Saudi Coast Guard said.

“According to the protocol for such cases where (the party entering without permission) refuses to stop, warning shots are fired, which results in them being forced to retreat,” he continued, as reported by Al Arabiya on Sunday (6/28/2020).
Saudi officials stress that the Saudi Coast Guard will never allow violations in their waters.
There have been many incidents in recent months when Iranian ships approached the US Navy and coast guard ships in the Gulf, with Washington describing the incident as dangerous and provocative.
Tehran has also recently issued a statement claiming it is ready to destroy US warships if they threaten Iranian ships.

In 2019, tensions in the region’s waters increased following a series of attacks on oil tankers. One involves two Saudi oil tankers being attacked in the Gulf. The US and Saudi Arabia blamed Iran, while Tehran denied the allegations.
