Saudi Arabia foils missile attack on Aramco oil region

Jakarta, CNN Indonesia

Leading Coalition Saudi Arabia successfully intercepted an attack missile ballistics aimed at the oil-rich eastern region of Saudi Arabia. This incident occurred on Saturday (4/9) local time.

The Saudi-led coalition says it is fighting the Houthis in Yemen. Quoted from Reuters, according to a source familiar with the matter. The missile was intercepted over the city of Dammam.

The coalition blamed Houthi forces, allied with Iran for the attack. However, tthere is no direct claim of responsibility in the Houthi-run media.

The coalition also said it intercepted and destroyed ballistic missiles headed for Jazan and Najran, both in the south of the country. The coalition also previously reported the interception of three drones loaded with explosives headed for the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

Eastern Arabia is home to oil infrastructure that was previously targeted and hit by air strikes. Attacks in September 2019 on two Aramco factories in the east temporarily paralyzed half of the country’s oil production.

Yemen’s Houthis, who regularly launch drones and missiles at the kingdom, have claimed responsibility for several attacks on Saudi oil installations in the past.

A source familiar with the matter said there was no impact on the facilities belonging to state-controlled oil giant Saudi Aramco and that the attack took place outside Aramco’s facilities.

A Saudi-led military coalition intervened in Yemen in 2015, supporting forces of ousted President Abd-Rabbu Mansour Hadi’s government fighting the Houthis.
