Saudi Arabia Executes Five Yemenis for Murder and Robbery, Bringing Total Executions to 12 in Two Days

Riyadh (AFP) – The Saudi authorities carried out the death sentence against five Yemenis who were convicted of killing one of their citizens and forming a “gang formation for the purpose of theft and robbery,” according to what the official media reported Thursday, which brings to 12 the number of executions carried out in the Kingdom within two days.

The ruling, which was implemented on Wednesday, comes the day after the execution of seven people who were convicted of “creating and financing terrorist organizations.”

Thus, Saudi Arabia has carried out 34 death sentences since the beginning of this year, according to a tally prepared by Agence France-Presse based on official data, noting that the authorities carried out 170 executions in 2023.

The official news agency “SPA” reported on Wednesday evening, “Hassan Fatini, Ibrahim Ali, Abdullah Darwish, Abdullah Majari, and Hamoud Shu’i participated in the killing of Ahmed Al-Aradi, all of them of Yemeni nationality, by hitting the victim with an object on the head, handcuffing him, and leaving him to die, and they formed a formation… Gang for the purpose of thefts and burglaries.”

She pointed out that their execution took place in Asir (southwest) after the ruling was upheld by the Specialized Court of Appeal and the Supreme Court.

Saudi Arabia faces frequent criticism for its excessive use of the death penalty.

In 2022, Saudi Arabia ranked third on the list of countries that most carry out death sentences in the world, according to Amnesty International.

However, the Saudi authorities stress that “the Kingdom’s government is keen to establish security, achieve justice, and implement God’s decrees against everyone who assaults innocent people or sheds their blood.”
