SatoshiLabs Investigates Phishing Email Campaign Targeting Trezor Hardware Wallet Users

The Czech company SatoshiLabs, which produces Trezor hardware wallets, is currently investigating a potential data leak. Their clients’ emails started receiving phishing emails encouraging them to install an application from the trezor.us domain. But the official domain is trezor.io.

SatoshiLabs is investigating the extent of the breach and advises users not to click on links from unauthorized sources to ensure their safety. Josef Tetek, Trezor brand ambassador, confirmed that he is aware of the phishing campaign and outlined the company’s ongoing efforts to combat such threats. The attack was reported by blockchain researcher ZachXBT via his Telegram channel. However, user reports can also be found on other social networks.

Trezor actively fights against fraudsters

Trezor has battled many phishing attempts over the years. The company maintains a real-time blacklist of fraudulent sites and guides users to identify fraud. In the past, it has also warned its users about a new phishing attack targeting their tokens by attempting to steal their private keys. In 2020, rival hardware wallet Ledger suffered a massive data breach when attackers publicly exposed the personal information of more than 270,000 Ledger customers.

Conclusion

Hardware wallets such as Trezor are known for their advanced features and high level of security. Nevertheless, phishing remains a significant threat to their users as well. An attacker can trick users into compromising their wallets or private keys themselves. The weakest link of the wallet thus becomes its user himself.

Of course, caution is required whether you use hardware or software wallets. There is a risk even if you keep your cryptocurrencies on an exchange or exchange. The amount of stolen cryptocurrencies is increasing rapidly every year. Last year alone, the number of phishing attacks increased by 40%. Pay attention to what you click not only in the email.
